{"id":240,"date":"2020-01-05T12:35:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-05T12:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/?p=240"},"modified":"2022-11-06T12:21:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T12:21:30","slug":"la-orotava-corpus-christi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/la-orotava-corpus-christi\/","title":{"rendered":"Alfombras de La Orotava \u2022 Feast of Corpus Christi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Feast of Corpus Christi<\/strong> takes place on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, usually in <strong>early June<\/strong>, and celebrates the Holy Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p>In the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/villa-la-orotava\/\">La Orotava<\/a>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/north-tenerife\/\">north of Tenerife<\/a>, Corpus Christi has become one of the most charming festivals in the Canary Islands \u2013 declared of Cultural Interest \u2013 and its celebration is quite an occasion on the island, a true ode to popular art.<\/p><div id=\"goten-3939615946\" class=\"goten-content_2 goten-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0088719563045673\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0088719563045673\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s because La Orotova celebrates Corpus Christi by decorating its streets with enormous rugs made with flower petals and sand. They are commonly known as <strong><em>Alfombras de La Orotava<\/em><\/strong> (\u201cLa Orotava carpets\u201d), true works of art made through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. They are ephemeral artworks which are made the night before the procession of the Corpus before disappearing after the event.<\/p>\n<h2>A 19th Century tradition<\/h2>\n<p>Before the tradition was born, the Feast of Corpus Christi in La Orotava was celebrated like in many other places, with a procession of the Corpus through the town\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n<p>The tradition emerged in the mid-19th century, around the year 1844. A family from the town &#8211; Monteverde del Castillo \u2013 decided to make a flower carpet in front of their house to honour and celebrate the moment that the Corpus passed by.<\/p>\n<p>From then on, and with the passing of the years, the tradition has gone from strength to strength to become what it is today \u2013 a true symbol of La Orotava\u2019s identity and a source of pride for <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/\">Tenerife<\/a>.
