It features an enormous central lake and is presided over by an imposing monument, as well as the ruins of the <em><strong>Castillo de San Crist\u00f3bal<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Plaza de Espa\u00f1a is the central point of the city, from which the main arteries of the city emerge from.<\/p><div id=\"goten-3240524535\" class=\"goten-content_2 goten-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0088719563045673\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0088719563045673\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Monument to the Fallen<\/h2>\n<p>Presiding over the Plaza is the Monument to the Fallen (<em>Monumento a los Ca\u00eddos<\/em>), which has stood since 1944 and has a curious history behind it. It was constructed by the Franco dictatorship in honour of the fallen nationalist soldiers in the Spanish Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>Architecturally, it is enormous cross-shaped tower which covers over 5000m\u00b2 and is exemplary of the <strong>monumental architecture<\/strong> that was a key part of Francoism. It is also influenced by Italian fascist architecture from the same era.<\/p>\n<p>At its base, there are different sculptures, including an allegory of the Fatherland holding the fallen soldiers, aa winged female figure representing Victory, and two soldiers representing the civic and military value.<\/p>\n<h2>Surroundings<\/h2>\n<p>Important spaces are concentrated around the Plaza, such as the <strong>Tenerife Island Council<\/strong>, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/\">island\u2019s government<\/a>, and the <strong><em>Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena<\/em><\/strong>, a beautiful park from the late 18th century.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Avenida de Anaga<\/strong> (<em>Anaga avenue<\/em>) is just next to the Plaza and covers most of Santa Cruz\u2019s coastline. Along the road, you\u2019ll find places like the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/tenerife-auditorium\/\"><strong>Auditorio de Tenerife<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/san-juan-castle\/\"><strong>Castillo de San Juan<\/strong><\/a>, the <strong>Casa de la P\u00f3lvora<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/parque-maritimo\/\"><strong>Parque Maritimo<\/strong><\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, you can also find the Plaza de la Candelaria, which is presided over by the <strong>Virgin of Candelaria<\/strong> (<em>Virgen de Candelaria<\/em>). It serves as a meeting point for the capital\u2019s residents during festivals. It is a pedestrianised square surrounded by bars, restaurants, and shops.<\/p>\n<p>The busy <em><strong>Calle del Castillo<\/strong><\/em> ends by the Plaza and serves as one of the main shopping streets in Santa Cruz. It stretches to <strong>Plaza Weyler<\/strong>, which is another central and popular square in the city. Many streets and alleyways start here and can take you to some of the city\u2019s hidden gems.<\/p>\n<p>If we return to the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a, you can also find the Plaza de la Iglesia close by, which takes its name from the oldest and most important church in the city, the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
