Two villages were unified into one town, which is now known as Los Realejos, in the north of Tenerife.<\/p>\n<h2>Realejo Alto<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Realejo Alto\u00a0<\/strong>forms an architectural complex of great cultural and heritage value of huge historical importance.\u00a0Here the last events of the European conquest of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/\">Tenerife<\/a> took place<\/strong>.\u00a0The term &#8220;realejo&#8221; refers, in the military sense, to the &#8220;place where an army is camped&#8221;, as this is the corner of the island where the Castilian army established its centre of operations during the last stages of the conquest of Tenerife, around the year 1496.<\/p><div id=\"goten-3985803913\" class=\"goten-content_2 goten-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0088719563045673\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0088719563045673\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>The historical complex revolves around the Church of the Apostle Santiago, which was one of the first buildings in Realejo Alto, where Alonso Fern\u00e1ndez de Lugo, conqueror of Tenerife, established his camp.<\/p>\n<h2>Some\u00a0<strong>places of interest\u00a0<\/strong>in Realejo Alto are:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Church of the Apostle Santiago<\/strong>.\u00a0One of the first Catholic churches to be built in Tenerife.\u00a0It is\u00a0declared a\u00a0National\u00a0Historic-Artistic\u00a0Monument.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plaza Viera and Clavijo<\/strong>.\u00a0One of the main squares of Realejo Alto.\u00a0On\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0raised\u00a0the\u00a0Church\u00a0of the\u00a0Apostle\u00a0Santiago.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plaza de la Uni\u00f3n<\/strong>. A square with privileged views. From there you can see the Barranco de God\u00ednez, where the last battles of the conquest of the island took place, in 1496.<\/li>\n<li><strong>House of Viera and Clavijo<\/strong>.\u00a0Hometown of the Canarian writer and intellectual Viera y Clavijo, one of the pillars of the Canarian cultural tradition, which he left reflected in his writings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Viera y Clavijo Library<\/strong>.\u00a0One of the best examples of the architecture of Los Realejos, the work of the architect Juan\u00a0Margarit\u00a0Serradell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Realejo Bajo<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Realejo Bajo<\/strong> has more to offer from an architectural perspective, having conserved almost 70% of its buildings.<\/p>\n<p>This urban centre originates from the estate of Hacienda de los Pr\u00edncipes, which was built by Alonso Fern\u00e1ndez de Luga after the conquest of Tenerife. After the construction of the Hacienda, agricultural practices began to develop in the area which led to houses being built and eventually creating the town now known as Realejo Bajo.<\/p>\n<p>The epicentre of the town centre is La Iglesia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Concepci\u00f3n, which is the starting point of the labyrinth of narrow uneven streets that characterise the town, as well as a great display of traditional Canarian houses which span from the 17th to 20th Century.<\/p>\n<h2>The <strong>highlights of Realejo Bajo<\/strong>\u00a0include:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepci\u00f3n<\/strong>: A catholic church constructed shortly after Europeans landed on the Canary Islands, with records of a small chapel on the same site at the start of the 16th Century.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hacienda de los Pr\u00edncipes<\/strong>: Los Realejos\u2019 symbolic building which represents its cultural heritage, originating in the 16th Century.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capilla de la Cruz de Marquez<\/strong>: Catholic chapel built at the end of the 19th Century with a traditional fa\u00e7ade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capilla de la Cruz Verde<\/strong>: A stone facade in a classic style originating from the old Franciscan Convent of Santa Luc\u00eda, which was formerly in the area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Casa Parroquial<\/strong>: A 17th Century house noteworthy for its beautiful wooden balcony.
