{"id":396,"date":"2020-02-23T18:02:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-23T18:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/?post_type=job_listing&#038;p=396"},"modified":"2022-03-03T20:40:15","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T20:40:15","slug":"old-convent-of-san-agustin","status":"publish","type":"job_listing","link":"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/old-convent-of-san-agustin\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Monastery of Saint Augustine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The story of the <strong>Former Monastery of Saint Augustine<\/strong> (<em>Former Monastery of San Agustin<\/em>) begins in the same way as all of the religious sites in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/\">Tenerife<\/a><\/strong> and the Canary Islands: with the arrival of the first Castilian colonisers. In this case, it was inaugurated in 1515 under the direction of the Augustine monks who arrived from the Iberian Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>As well as a monastery, the building has had multiple uses since its construction in order to adapt to historical needs and circumstances. It has served as a place of study, a weather station, and a library, as well as even being used as a prison during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).<\/p><div id=\"goten-1608341570\" class=\"goten-content_2 goten-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0088719563045673\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0088719563045673\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, education has carried the most weight in its history, as it was the location of the first university and the first secondary school on the archipelago. Today, it holds a school and a small museum.
