It has the best preserved and most beautiful old towns in all of Tenerife and has held the title of <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> since the end of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century.<\/p>\n<p>San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna was the first city founded in <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/\">Tenerife<\/a>, in 1496 by Adelantado of the Canary Islands <strong>Alonso Fern\u00e1ndez de Lugo<\/strong> and has been a source of inspiration for cities like Old Havana or Cartagena in Colombia.<\/p><div id=\"goten-3161706866\" class=\"goten-content_2 goten-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0088719563045673\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0088719563045673\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the years following its foundation, the elite and aristocracy based themselves in the city, making it the de facto seat of <strong>political and religious power on the island<\/strong>. During these years, La Laguna also became a centre of cultural, artistic and scientific brilliance, and was considered the cradle of the Enlightenment on the archipelago. Its importance on the religious level is manifested in the several religious buildings that are built in the old town, in particular the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/concepcion-laguna\/\">Church of La Concepcion<\/a> (<em>Iglesia de la Concepci\u00f3n<\/em>), which is the Mother Church for the islands temples.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the streets of La Laguna are full of life and University spirit, with no lack of cafes, good restaurants, and shops of all types. These are some of its landmark spots and buildings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena<\/strong>.\u00a0Inaugurated in 1611 as a cloistered convent, it became one of the most popular and rich in heritage in Tenerife.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monastery of Santa Clara de As\u00eds<\/strong>.\u00a0Founded\u00a0in\u00a01547, it was the first female convent on the island.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Convent of San Juan Bautista.<\/strong>\u00a0It was inaugurated by the Franciscan Order of the Poor Clares in 1577, and has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/old-convent-of-san-agustin\/\"><strong>Former Monastery of Saint Augustine<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0Founded at the beginning of the 16th century by Augustinian friars who arrived from the Iberian Peninsula.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Royal Sanctuary of Christ<\/strong>.\u00a0One of the most important Catholic temples in Tenerife, since it houses the Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de La Laguna, one of the most revered images on the island.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/la-laguna-cathedral\/\"><strong>Cathedral of San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0Construction from the 16th century, declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/conception-laguna\/\">Church of the Immaculate Conception<\/a><\/strong>. Mother Church of the island of Tenerife, from which most of the island&#8217;s churches are born.<\/li>\n<li><strong>House of the Captains General<\/strong>.\u00a0Built between 1624 and 1631 by the Captain General of Tenerife, Diego de Alvarado.\u00a0Today it houses the San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna Town Hall.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/nava\/\"><strong>Palacio de Nava<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Palace of Nava<\/em>).\u00a016th century palace, representative of the cultured architecture of the Canary Islands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lercaro\u00a0Palace<\/strong>.\u00a0Property from the end of the 16th century, built by a family of Genoese merchants from Tenerife, the\u00a0Lercaro.\u00a0Today it houses one of the headquarters of the Museum of History and Anthropology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Salazar Palace<\/strong>.\u00a0Baroque style construction built around the year 1691, by the Count of Valle de Salazar.\u00a0It is\u00a0the\u00a0seat\u00a0of the\u00a0Bishopric\u00a0of Tenerife.<\/li>\n<li><strong>House of Letter.<\/strong>\u00a0Remarkable example of a manor house in Tenerife.\u00a0Built during the 18th century.\u00a0It is one of the headquarters of the Museum of History and Anthropology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>House of Blessed Father\u00a0Anchieta<\/strong>.\u00a0Former home of Jos\u00e9 de\u00a0Anchieta, a Jesuit missionary in the Portuguese colony of Brazil, originally from the Canary\u00a0Islands.\u00a0Character of great influence in the history of Brazil, having been one of the founders of S\u00e3o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hospital and Church of Our Lady of Los Dolores<\/strong>.\u00a0The history of this architectural ensemble began in the 16th century, when the hospital was built, which was later expanded with the construction of the church in the 18th century.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/leal-theatre\/\"><strong>Teatro Leal<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Leal Theatre<\/em>).\u00a0Despite being inaugurated at the beginning of the 20th century, today it is one of the most recognized heritage landmarks in the historic center of La Laguna.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Corregidor&#8217;s house<\/strong>.\u00a0Building built between 1540 and 1546.
