{"id":107,"date":"2019-10-01T18:42:48","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T17:42:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/?post_type=job_listing&#038;p=107"},"modified":"2022-04-09T23:57:23","modified_gmt":"2022-04-09T22:57:23","slug":"church-saint-augustine","status":"publish","type":"job_listing","link":"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/church-saint-augustine\/","title":{"rendered":"Church and Former Convent of Saint Augustine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Church and Former Convent of Saint Augustine<\/strong> (<em>Iglesia y ex convento de San Agustin<\/em>) is in the north of Tenerife and is one of the most important historical buildings in <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/villa-la-orotava\/\">Villa de La Orotava<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The church was built in the <strong>late-17th Century<\/strong> by the Augustine order, who were able to bring together the most powerful families in the town into what was called the <strong>Fellowship of the Twelve Houses<\/strong> to build a church that would be visible throughout practically the entire La Orotava Valley. It would also serve to consolidate La Orotova as a centre of power against <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/explore\/historical-centre-la-laguna\/\">San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna<\/a>, which was back then capital of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gotenerife.net\/en\/\">island<\/a>.<\/p><div id=\"goten-954973755\" class=\"goten-content_2 goten-entity-placement\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-0088719563045673\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-0088719563045673\" \ndata-ad-slot=\"\" \ndata-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins>\n<script> \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p>So, in 1671, the works began at the hands of Francisco Bautista Ben\u00edtez de Lugo y Castillo and was then opened in 1694.<\/p>\n<h2>Sacred Art<\/h2>\n<p>Inside the church, the highlight is the image of <strong>Our Lady of Grace<\/strong> (<em>Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Gracia<\/em>), which presides over the Main Chapel and dates from the 17th Century.
